Greek government halts foreclosures and auctions for fire-hit households for a year

A joint decision by the ministers of finance and climate crisis freezes all forced-execution actions, including auctions and seizures, for fire-affected individuals and businesses for 12 months, except alimony claims.

Ministers Κυριάκος Πιερρακάκης and Κωνσταντίνος Κατσαφάδου issued a joint decree, recorded in ΦΕΚ B 5579/15.09.2026, that suspends for twelve months all forced-execution procedures against individuals and enterprises certified as victims of the July-August 2026 wildfires. The freeze includes auctions, seizures, evictions, personal garnishments and any court-imposed deadlines, while alimony obligations are excluded. Eligibility requires registration in the state-aid scheme or the housing-compensation programme, meaning the relief does not extend to all residents of the affected zones.

Both movable and immovable property are covered. The decree lists the specific regional units: West Attica and islands of Attica, Achaea and Aetolia-Acarnania, Kefalonia and Ithaca, Lasithi and Rethymno, Argolis, Boeotia, Evia and Phocis, Kalymnos, Paros and Andros, Thessaloniki metropolitan area and Chalkidiki, and Lesbos. The measure forms part of broader economic assistance for those harmed by the summer fires.

Why it matters

It protects fire-victims from losing homes and assets while they recover, easing the economic fallout of the 2026 wildfires.
