Greek government raises heating allowance by 30% to ease household energy costs
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakas announced a 30% increase in the heating subsidy, lifting the minimum benefit to €130 and raising the top tier above last year’s level.
Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakas disclosed a 30% boost to Greece’s heating allowance, raising the minimum payment from €100 to €130 and increasing the maximum tier beyond the previous year’s ceiling. The package also includes a direct subsidy at the pump for heating oil to cut prices at the point of sale. Benefits will be calibrated according to family composition, number of members and the specific region, with larger sums earmarked for zones that experience severe winter temperatures such as Florina, Nymfaio, Karpenisi, Velouchi and the highlands of Arcadia.
Conversely, areas with milder winters like the Cyclades and Crete will receive lower amounts. The expanded aid covers all eligible heating sources, including electricity, natural gas, firewood and other qualifying fuels. Detailed implementation guidelines will be issued the following day by the Environment and Energy Minister and the deputy finance minister.
Why it matters
The subsidy aims to shield Greek households from soaring energy bills amid an international crisis.
