Greek government unveils holiday supermarket plan to curb festive price hikes
Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos announced a new holiday package of essential foods and an extension of price-control measures to keep supermarket prices stable during Christmas and New Year.
Greece's Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos revealed a plan to create a holiday supermarket bundle of key Christmas and New Year foods, aiming to prevent price spikes during the festive period. The scheme calls on supermarkets to expand the selection of commonly bought items, while an existing price-control pact will be prolonged until year-end. So far, price reductions have been logged for 1,740 individual products.
The minister highlighted that certain price rises can be explained by higher fuel and energy expenses, but others appear opportunistic and will be tackled. He noted that the Independent Consumer Protection Authority has submitted proposals, which are being examined for possible further action. The government intends to present any additional measures to the prime minister and the cabinet.
Why it matters
Keeping essential food prices stable helps Greek households manage higher living costs during the holidays.
