Greek government vows to use every euro to curb heating oil costs
New Democracy spokesperson Alexandra Sdoukou said the government will exhaust all resources to keep heating oil prices below 1.75 euros and increase the heating allowance.
In a press briefing, New Democracy’s press officer Alexandra Sdoukou warned that the approaching winter poses a severe challenge for Greek households due to high fuel costs. She explained that heating oil prices have already climbed to 1.75 euros per litre and could surge to between 1.90 and 2 euros if the government takes no action when orders open on the 15th. Sdoukou asserted that the cabinet and its economic team are seeking every possible euro to keep the price as low as possible, with a decision expected later this week.
She also announced an increase in the heating allowance and a broader list of beneficiaries than last year. While acknowledging that current measures are insufficient, she cited external factors such as the Ukraine war, Middle-East tensions, and pipeline attacks as drivers of the energy crisis.
Why it matters
