Greek households tighten budgets as over 70% struggle to meet monthly expenses
More than seven in ten Greeks say they find it hard to cover monthly costs, cutting back on clothing, footwear and leisure spending.
According to data shared at the ECR Gathering, over 70% of Greeks report difficulty meeting their monthly expenses, prompting careful budgeting. The survey revealed that 75% have reduced clothing purchases and 77% have cut entertainment spending outside the home. Retail and hospitality businesses are seeing lower sales, and the usual summer tourism boost has not reversed the downward trend.
Eating out remains a habit, but consumers are opting for less expensive meals and fewer outings, averaging 2.9 outings per month. Moreover, 45% have limited travel due to fuel costs, 30% are saving on electricity or gas, and 28% have trimmed food budgets, while only 7% report no reductions at all.
Why it matters
The findings highlight deepening cost-of-living pressures on Greek families and their ripple effects on the retail and hospitality sectors.
