Greek MEP calls for EU sanctions over Libya's challenge to Greece's maritime rights

MEP Giannis Maniatis has asked EU High Representative Kaja Kallas to examine targeted sanctions against those responsible for Libya's recent maritime claims against Greece.

Greek Socialist Party MEP Giannis Maniatis sent a formal inquiry to EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, seeking an assessment of possible targeted EU sanctions on persons or companies linked to Libya's recent maritime assertions. He noted Libya's rejection of upcoming hydrocarbon explorations south of Crete and its unilateral claims based on the contested Turkey-Libya memorandum, which the European Council and European Parliament have repeatedly declared illegal under international law.

Maniatis asked that the matter be placed on the agenda of the Council of Foreign Affairs so the EU can translate its condemnations into specific diplomatic steps. He stressed that defending Greece's sovereign rights is also a collective European responsibility.

Why it matters

The request could lead to EU sanctions, raising the stakes in a dispute over Mediterranean maritime boundaries.
