Greek officials consider caps on visitors as Balos Beach swarms with tourists

A widely shared video of Balos Beach in Crete shows a dense throng of tourists on the narrow pier and lagoon, leading many viewers to label the scene “hell.” While some commenters argue the clip reflects a peak moment rather than everyday conditions, the surge highlights growing concerns over overtourism at EU Natura 2000 sites. Local officials in Kissamos report that the beach and nearby sites such as Elafonisi and Falassarna receive between 4,000 and 5,000 visitors each day during peak months, overwhelming environmental safeguards.

To address the pressure, a proposal under discussion would require visitors to reserve specific dates and times online and would set a maximum daily “carrying capacity” for each location. The scheme would involve coordination among Greece’s Environment Ministry, the Region of Crete and the Kissamos municipality, with a decision expected before the 2027 summer season. Similar crowding issues have been noted at Santorini’s Oia and Ibiza’s Cala Saladeta, underscoring a broader Mediterranean challenge.
