Greek PM Mitsotakis inaugurates smart research hub for AI and cybersecurity at Demokritos

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis opened the new smart building of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, which will host AI, next-generation network and cybersecurity research.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated the cutting-edge smart building of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications, a component of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”. The ceremony featured Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, Deputy Development Minister Stavros Kalafatis, Research and Innovation Secretary Dimitris Terzis, institute director Vangelis Karkaletsis and deputy director Giorgos Paliouras, who emphasized the centre’s focus on artificial intelligence, next-generation networking and cyber-security.

The facility houses a new data centre that will support all Demokritos institutes and companies located in the “Leukippos” technology park. It also contains a node of the National Network of Technology Infrastructure and Research (EDYTE) that connects at high speed and security to the DAIDALOS supercomputer for data processing. Additionally, the building accommodates the offices of Pharos A.E., Greece’s AI manufacturing firm, and serves as a live laboratory for smart-building technologies. The construction is part of a broader campus development programme funded by the European Investment Bank.

Why it matters

The hub strengthens Greece's capacity for AI, networking and cyber-security research and innovation.
