Greek police seize bakery chain owner in massive tax fraud operation

Greece’s Financial Police arrested the owner of the To Choriatiko bakery chain and several staff members in a large-scale tax fraud investigation.

On Sunday, Greece’s Financial Police carried out a major operation, often likened to a “Greek FBI,” arresting the proprietor of the To Choriatiko bakery chain along with the company’s accountant and several other employees and executives. Simultaneous raids were conducted in multiple locations, and additional detentions are anticipated. The investigation, which started at the beginning of the year, focuses on a web of about 200 companies allegedly employed for sham transactions and tax evasion.

The case encompasses not only the bakery outlets but also the owner’s nightclubs and other ventures along the Athens Riviera. Prosecutors have charged the suspects with forming a criminal organization, fraud against the state, tax evasion, and failure to remit VAT and social security contributions, with reported losses exceeding €100 million. The chain operates dozens of stores across Attica and other regions, both directly owned and franchised. The businessman also has a prior conviction related to human-trafficking and pimping offenses dating back to 2008.

Why it matters

The arrests highlight extensive tax evasion and organized crime links within a prominent Greek business network.
