Greek public debt contracts in Q2 2026 as revenues climb

The second quarter of 2026 saw Greece's public debt shrink compared with the same period a year earlier, while government revenues increased.

ELSTAT reported that Greece's public debt decreased in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the corresponding quarter of 2025. The General Government's revenues rose, supported by increased income and property taxes as well as a slight uptick in social contributions. On the spending side, total outlays grew, with primary expenditures and payments for social benefits both higher than a year earlier.

Payments for contracted work also increased, whereas subsidies fell noticeably. These figures come from the quarterly non-financial accounts and illustrate a fiscal environment where revenue growth is partially offset by expanding expenditures.

Why it matters

The data show how Greece's fiscal balance is evolving, affecting debt sustainability and economic policy.
