Green Party deputy calls for public ownership of AI and water utilities

Green Party deputy leader Rachel Millward urged that AI and major water firms be taken into public ownership, proposing immediate action for South East Water and Thames Water.

In a recent statement, Green Party deputy leader Rachel Millward said AI technology ought to be owned by the public, criticizing its current control by what she termed "Silicon Valley proto-fascists." She linked this call to a broader push for public ownership of utilities, pledging to bring South East Water and Thames Water back under state control before Christmas, asserting that both firms are insolvent and can be reclaimed without burdening taxpayers.

Millward claimed the party possesses all necessary mechanisms to execute the takeover, dismissing the need for shareholder or creditor compensation. The proposal also includes granting mayors new powers to hold water companies accountable. On the same day, the Greens introduced a policy guaranteeing a two-year job for every 18- to 24-year-old, to start within four months of completing education, as announced by deputy leader Mothin Ali.

Why it matters

It outlines a radical shift toward public control of AI and essential services, affecting consumers and the tech sector.
