Green Party sued by members after trans anti-Zionist elected to women’s council seat

Eleanora Folan, a self-identified communist and anti-Zionist trans woman, was elected last month to represent the Eastern Region on the Green Party’s council in a women-only slot. Gender-critical members argue the vote contravenes the Supreme Court’s ruling that the term "woman" in the Equality Act refers only to biological women, and they have initiated legal proceedings. The Greens are already facing separate court challenges over their sex-and-gender policies, with The Good Law Project offering legal support.

Critics, including Jude English of the Green Women’s Declaration, say the party has ignored the court’s guidance and failed to protect women’s rights. The party’s leadership, headed by Zack Polanski, asserts that all elections follow the party’s constitution and that trans women are recognised as women. The controversy follows earlier legal disputes, such as a case involving former deputy leader Shahrar Ali, who received compensation for discrimination based on his gender-critical views.
