Green Party’s Muslim wing releases guide labeling most criticism of Islam as Islamophobic

The Green Party’s Muslim faction published a document that classifies a wide range of remarks about Islam, including criticism of the Koran and opposition to gay rights, as Islamophobic.

The Muslim wing of the Greens of England and Wales issued a handbook that labels virtually any critique of Islam as Islamophobic, including remarks about the Koran, women’s rights, and same-sex marriage. It claims that anti-Islamic laws in Muslim-majority countries are a legacy of British colonialism and suggests that accusing a Muslim of being oppressed may itself be Islamophobic. The guide also advises members that attending venues serving alcohol could be considered racist.

In addition, the article notes the party’s position on Israel, describing calls for the abolition of the Jewish state as non-racist, and references recent demonstrations that featured pro-Hamas chants and extremist slogans. The author criticizes the Greens for prioritising identity politics over environmental issues and warns that such unchecked rhetoric could have broader consequences if the party gains power.

Why it matters

It shows how internal party policies on free speech and identity can shape public debate and affect broader political discourse.
