Greenland urges cruise ships to avoid fragile fjords amid resident concerns

The Greenlandic government has asked cruise operators to limit or skip passages through certain fjords after locals raised worries about noise, wildlife disturbance and the preservation of recreational areas.

Following complaints from Greenland residents about noise, wildlife disruption and the need to preserve recreational and fishing grounds, the Naalakkersuisut government released guidance asking cruise operators to reduce or avoid sailing through selected fjords. The advice seeks to limit environmental impact and respect local desires to keep natural areas intact. Industry participants, including ship captains, are urged to consider these local conditions when planning routes, and the guidance may evolve into binding restrictions.

Municipalities, together with the central government, are preparing zoning regulations under the Tourism Act to delineate permissible cruise zones, incorporating feedback from communities and businesses. The summer season continues to draw both expedition vessels and larger passenger ships, with ports such as Qaqortoq and Nanortalik expecting over 20 cruise calls soon. Major cruise brands like Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, AIDA, Viking, Windstar, Explora, Holland America, Celebrity and Virgin are currently operating in the region.

Why it matters

The guidance could reshape tourism in Greenland, balancing economic benefits with environmental and community protection.
