Greenpeace says Ikea furniture may be made from protected Carpathian forests

Greenpeace Romania alleges that wood from the protected Rusca Montană area in the Carpathians has entered Ikea's supply chain, despite legal safeguards.

Greenpeace Romania released a study accusing Ikea of using wood harvested from the protected Rusca Montană area within the Carpathian Natura 2000 site. The organization says the forest, known for high biological value, was logged and blended with other wood, likely reaching Ikea's product line. Valentin Sălăgeanu, who leads forest and biodiversity work for Greenpeace Romania, described the situation as a systemic failure that masks unsustainable logging as "sustainable".

Ikea's raw-material manager Ulf Johansson responded that roughly two percent of Romanian timber is destined for the company and that the logging does not meet Ikea's standards. Greenpeace has reported the case to the Forest Stewardship Council and plans to highlight the issue at the UN biodiversity conference (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia.

Why it matters

It raises concerns about corporate sourcing practices and the effectiveness of forest protection policies.
