Greens admit anti-AfD strategy has failed and call for new approach
Green Party faction leaders say their efforts to curb the AfD have fallen short and urge a change in tactics.
Green Party faction chairs Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann released an internal strategy document stating that all previous measures to oppose the AfD have proved ineffective. The five-page paper, sent to all Green Bundestag members, blames the overall democratic bloc for the right-wing surge and points to the inadequate post-Covid review as a major credibility gap. It calls for the Greens to work with the ruling coalition on investments in infrastructure, safety and climate protection, emphasizing that long-term issues transcend electoral cycles.
The authors also argue that the party’s communication has relied too much on factual rebuttals and should adopt more positive, emotionally resonant messages. They plan to present the paper to the parliamentary group on Tuesday, noting that voters in structurally weak regions feel abandoned by politics. The Greens have already supported the special fund that finances the proposed projects.
Why it matters
The Greens' admission signals a potential shift in Germany's opposition strategy against the rising AfD.
