Grindr agrees to £26 million settlement over UK privacy breach claims

Thousands of Grindr users in the United Kingdom brought a group action alleging that the dating app leaked highly sensitive data, such as HIV status, to third-party advertisers during its early years. Represented by the London firm Austen Hays, the claim covered up to early 2020, when Grindr was owned by Beijing Kunlun Tech. The company has now agreed to a £26 million settlement, which will be paid in two installments: £13 million by the end of one outlet year and the balance by March 2027.

Although Grindr disputes the allegations, it said the settlement reflects recognition of the distress experienced by some users. The firm also noted that its privacy practices have been overhauled since 2020 and that it remains committed to user safety and transparency. Austen Hays’s parent, Gateley, was contacted for comment.
