Grocery prices rise modestly as shoppers rely on promotions
Supermarket prices are now 2.5% higher than a year ago, prompting shoppers to lean more on special offers.
Worldpanel's latest figures reveal that grocery prices have increased to 2.5% compared with the same period last year, a rise from the earlier 2.3% level. Over the recent month, retailers' promotional spending jumped by more than a quarter of a billion pounds, highlighting shoppers' dependence on discounts to keep grocery costs down. Fraser McKevitt of Worldpanel noted that concerns over living costs and fuel prices are driving this cautious buying behaviour.
While overall inflation climbs, chocolate confectionery prices fell 3% year-on-year, offering some relief ahead of the festive season. Pumpkin purchases rose 10% year-on-year, and pumpkin-spice coffee saw notable uptake, reflecting seasonal trends.
