Grocery shopkeeper charged with assault after allegedly pressing knee on wife's neck

In a case heard in Batu Pahat magistrate's court, a 49-year-old grocery shopkeeper was charged under Sections 323 and 326A of the Penal Code for allegedly pressing his knee on his 45-year-old wife's neck, causing her to struggle for breath and suffer pain in her neck and hands. The alleged assault took place at a residence in Tongkang Pechah at 12.45 am on Sept 17 while the victim was lying on a bed. She later sought medical care at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital.

The accused entered a not-guilty plea, and Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno set bail at RM4,000, requiring monthly police station reports and prohibiting contact with the victim until the case concludes. The prosecution was led by Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shahzleen Ibrahim, while the defence was provided by Normaahani Rais of the National Legal Aid Foundation. The next court mention is scheduled for Oct 28 for document submission and counsel appointment.
