Groningen and Drenthe set to host 2034 World Cycling Championships
Groningen deputy for sport Marian van Dijken welcomed the award of the 2034 World Cycling Championships to the northern provinces, hoping it will showcase the region.
Marian van Dijken, the Groningen deputy responsible for sport, voiced strong support for the decision to hold the 2034 World Cycling Championships in Groningen and Drenthe, despite her original wish for a 2032 date. She emphasized that the competition will give tens of millions of television viewers a chance to see what the northern provinces have to offer. The planned course will traverse all municipalities across the two regions, and the regional recovery programme Nij Begun has earmarked funds to aid the event.
Thijs Rondhuis, owner of Courage Events, clarified that the financing comes from a budget aimed at regional economic development, not directly from the damage-compensation fund. He said the goal is to promote the area, stimulate the leisure economy and attract tourists. Roelien Kamminga, the mayor of Groningen, added that cycling is deeply rooted in the local culture and that the championship is an ideal showcase for the region.
