Growth-hormone peptides marketed for anti-aging face scant evidence and safety concerns
Injectable peptides promoted as natural ways to raise growth hormone and slow aging have little scientific support and pose serious health risks.
The surge in injectable peptides marketed to boost growth hormone and combat aging rests on the premise that restoring youthful hormone levels will reverse age-related decline. Compounds such as sermorelin and tesamorelin were originally FDA-approved for pediatric growth-hormone deficiency and HIV-associated lipodystrophy, respectively, and have not been evaluated in healthy adults for performance or longevity benefits.
Unapproved peptides like CJC-1295, ipamorelin, GHRP-2 and GHRP-6 are sold through compounding pharmacies and telehealth services, often in stacked regimens that make it difficult to isolate individual effects. Studies of direct growth-hormone therapy in older adults show modest increases in lean body mass but also side effects including edema, joint pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and an elevated diabetes risk, without meaningful improvements in functional ability.
Researchers warn that excessive hormone stimulation can lead to acromegaly-like symptoms and increase cardiovascular and cancer risks. A recent, non-peer-reviewed analysis found that 40-70 % of tested gray-market peptide batches failed basic quality standards, with about 15 % showing signs of bacterial contamination, raising further safety concerns.
