GSA launches aggressive hiring drive to rebuild Public Buildings Service staff

The General Services Administration announced a push to fill 142 new positions as it seeks to recover from massive workforce reductions in its Public Buildings Service.

Facing a 45% reduction that eliminated over 2,500 workers, the General Services Administration’s Public Buildings Service is attempting to rebuild its workforce by advertising 142 new jobs on USAJobs, ranging from construction managers to lease contracting officers. Administrator Ed Forst told agency leaders that a substantial increase in hiring is essential to sustain GSA’s expanding mission. An internal source said the posted vacancies are just one week’s worth of hiring, with several hundred additional openings, including merit promotions, already in the pipeline.

The cuts, made without prior workforce planning, have left the agency struggling to manage its $50 billion maintenance backlog and to offload underused federal properties. Congressional leaders have urged full access to the Federal Buildings Fund to address the backlog, while recent legislation targeting courthouse management reflects broader concerns about GSA’s capacity. Recent hiring efforts aim to reverse the “brain drain” and restore operational stability.
