GST Council to discuss streamlined registration and automated cancellations on Sept. 12

The GST Council will convene in New Delhi on September 12 to consider simplifying registration for businesses with monthly tax credits over Rs 2.5 lakh and to explore automated cancellation procedures.

On September 12, the GST Council will meet in New Delhi, with Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presiding over state finance ministers. An officers' session on September 11 will precede the main gathering. Key topics are the creation of a consistent registration system for enterprises whose monthly tax credit exceeds Rs 2.5 lakh and the rollout of automated cancellation of GST registrations.

Currently, central and state GST authorities follow differing procedures, causing uncertainty for taxpayers. The council’s agenda also revisits reforms introduced after its September 2025 meeting, which overhauled the GST rate structure and launched a simplified scheme for small and low-risk businesses. About 1.68 crore entities are presently registered under GST.

Why it matters

Changes could reduce compliance complexity for millions of Indian businesses and improve tax administration.
