Guangzhou South railway hub handles over a million passengers, a train every 40 seconds
On the first day of China’s Golden Week, Guangzhou South processed 1.049 million passenger trips, dispatching a train roughly every 40 seconds at peak times.
Guangzhou South, one of five main rail hubs in the provincial capital of about 19.1 million people, recorded 1.049 million passenger movements on the opening day of the seven-day National Day holiday, according to the Guangdong Province Communist Party Committee’s publicity department. A total of 1,252 train services ran, including 202 overnight high-speed trips, and at peak periods a departure occurred every 40 seconds, a cadence the agency likened to the length of a short video.
The station’s 15 platforms and 28 tracks support connections to 196 cities such as Shenzhen, Changsha, Nanning, Zhuhai, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Beijing and Hong Kong. Officials expanded transfer areas and added services using ticket-waitlist data, boosting capacity to key destinations. Independent railway analyst David Feng noted the figures illustrate why Guangzhou South is among the busiest stations in the country.
