Guardia Civil foils helicopter jailbreak scheme for French drug lord at Alhaurín prison

The Guardia Civil stopped a cartel's plan to extract a French narcotics leader from Alhaurín de la Torre prison using a helicopter.

Anti-drug forces of the Guardia Civil established a 48-hour security cordon with several armed vehicles around the Alhaurín de la Torre prison in Málaga to prevent a helicopter from landing on the grounds. The plot aimed to free a French narcotics kingpin detained in the prison’s module 9, but the Ministry of the Interior had already moved him to another center, a fact unknown to the conspirators. Despite the inmate’s relocation, the cartel persisted in preparing the rescue, prompting authorities to maintain the deployment.

The thwarted attempt underscores the growing logistical capabilities of drug networks, especially on the Costa del Sol, and highlights the challenges Spanish prisons face in stopping both escapes and ongoing criminal coordination from inside. Prison staff unions have warned that organized crime increasingly threatens prison safety. Similar helicopter-assisted escapes have occurred elsewhere in Europe, leading to calls for tighter security measures.

Why it matters

It shows how organized crime can orchestrate complex jailbreaks, testing prison security and public safety.
