Guatemala anti-corruption lawyer Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa killed in shooting

Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa, a prominent anti-corruption attorney, was shot dead in Guatemala City, prompting condemnation from President Bernardo Arevalo.

Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa, a well-known anti-corruption lawyer and former prosecutor, was fatally shot by two men while visiting a sports centre in Guatemala City. Police apprehended two suspects shortly after the incident and seized a carbine-style firearm and a motorcycle they say are connected to the murder. President Bernardo Arevalo publicly condemned the act, labeling it cowardly and pledging that both the gunmen and any masterminds will face full legal consequences.

Solorzano Foppa had headed the Criminal Investigations Directorate within the Public Prosecutor's Office and later led the tax authority SAT, where he pursued high-profile cases against influential business leaders. In 2025 he alleged links between the Barrio 18 gang, the National Unity of Hope party and the judicial system, and briefly joined the defense team of journalist Jose Ruben Zamora before withdrawing amid accusations of obstructing the case.

Why it matters

The killing threatens Guatemala's anti-corruption efforts and raises concerns about violence against legal reformers.
