Guide to Casting Votes in the 2026 Czech Municipal Elections
The upcoming municipal elections will use a single ballot where voters mark crosses for parties and candidates, with the number of marks limited by the council size.
The 2026 Czech municipal elections will be conducted using a single sheet ballot that contains every party and candidate running in each locality. Voters indicate preferences by crossing boxes, with each cross representing one vote; the total number of crosses a voter may place equals the number of council seats in that municipality. Authorities must display the council size on public boards and on the ballot itself, allowing voters to verify the limit.
Voters can allocate all, some, or none of their votes to a single party, to individual candidates of one party, or to candidates across different parties, but any marks beyond the allowed number render the ballot invalid. Unused votes simply lapse, and ballots must be placed in a stamped envelope before being deposited in the ballot box. Special rules apply in eight statutory cities and in Vratislavice nad Nisou, where voters receive two separate ballots for district and city councils.
