Gujarati immigrant charged with first-degree murder after stabbing wife in Chicago

Police in Chicago responded to a call on August 9 and found a 32-year-old woman dead from a stab wound to the neck inside an apartment on North Avers Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and the suspect, a 32-year-old Gujarati man from Kadi in Mehsana district, was arrested at O’Hare International Airport roughly nine hours later and charged with first-degree murder. Family members told reporters that the couple had migrated to the United States eight years ago, first residing in Michigan before moving to Chicago, and that the husband had sent their five-year-old daughter to India a few days before the homicide.

On the day of the murder, he allegedly called his wife and asked her to bring the child, a request relatives say was used to draw her to the flat. Earlier in May, after the wife briefly left him for a man nearly a decade younger, the accused posted a Gujarati-language video speaking of suicidal thoughts and pleading for family intervention. The wife had returned after that relationship soured, but left again shortly before the fatal incident.
