Gun-control groups urge RCMP to share details of Tumbler Ridge firearms

Five gun-control organisations sent a letter to RCMP Commissioner Michael Duheme on September 14, seeking details on the firearms employed in the February 10 Tumbler Ridge Secondary School attack that left nine people dead, including the shooter. The letter, signed by Heidi Rathjen of PolySeSouvient and representatives of four other groups, contends that transparency would bolster public trust and aid policy discussions on gun safety.

It asks for information on the weapons' make, model, type, classification, legal status, as well as related magazines, prohibited devices, ammunition and accessories. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark acknowledged the correspondence but noted that, because the investigation is still active, certain details cannot be disclosed at this time. He added that the police will share verified information when it becomes available and thanked the public for its patience. The groups also requested a clear explanation if any information must remain withheld and an estimate of when updates might be provided.
