Gunman opens fire at Kyiv recruitment center, wounding six amid draft tensions

A man shot at a Kyiv Territorial Recruitment Center, injuring three police officers and three service members; the shooter was detained.

On the evening of Oct. 19, a man escorted to Kyiv’s Pechersk Territorial Recruitment Center for suspected draft evasion opened fire at approximately 7 p.m., targeting police officers and military personnel present at the facility. The assault left three police officers and three members of the armed forces injured, all of whom were transported to medical facilities for care. Police quickly detained the shooter and launched a criminal investigation.

This episode follows a pattern of escalating attacks on recruitment officials across Ukraine, including a recent stabbing in Lviv and a shooting in Odesa, reflecting growing public resistance to forced conscription. Ukrainian officials have warned that the nation must mobilize at least 30,000 individuals monthly to sustain its defence, prompting increasingly aggressive recruitment tactics. The incident underscores the heightened social and political strain surrounding the mobilization drive under martial law.
