Gustav Iden settles for silver at Ironman World Championships after drafting penalty
Norwegian Gustav Iden finished second at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, a three-minute drafting penalty likely costing him the gold.
French athlete Vincent Luis claimed the Ironman World Championship title in Kona, Hawaii, completing the 226-kilometre race in 7 hours 47 minutes 27 seconds. Norway’s Gustav Iden, who became the first Norwegian winner in 2022, was handed a three-minute drafting penalty on the cycling portion and was required to remain stationary in a penalty box. The sanction pushed Iden from a potential gold-medal position to a silver finish, crossing the line 1 minute 35 seconds after Luis.
Iden started the marathon leg ninth, trailing leader Magnus Ditlev by over eight minutes, but advanced as several favorites, including Kristian Blummenfelt and Ditlev, struggled and withdrew. The race, known for extreme heat, humidity and wind, highlighted the harsh conditions that tested the endurance of the world’s top triathletes.
