Guye Adola repeats Berlin Marathon victory as Tigist Assefa eyes record
Guye Adola of Ethiopia claimed his second Berlin Marathon win, finishing in an unofficial 2:02:50, while Tigist Assefa aimed for a women’s world record.
Guye Adola, 35, won the Berlin Marathon for the second time, crossing the finish line in an unofficial 2:02:50. He was followed by Ethiopian runner Gemechu Dida Diriba, who arrived 28 seconds later, and Tanzanian athlete Gabriel Gerald Geay in third place. In the women’s division, Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa was on pace to set a new world record, which has been broken fourteen times in Berlin’s history.
Organizers moved the start time forward after last year’s high temperatures, yet the day featured clear autumn sunshine and minimal wind, providing near-ideal racing conditions. The event highlighted the continued dominance of East African runners in major marathons.
Why it matters
