H&M and Zara shift toward premium lines as ultra-fast rivals reshape market

Facing competition from ultra-fast retailers like Shein, H&M and Zara are introducing higher-priced, designer-collaboration pieces to move upmarket.

Chinese ultra-fast fashion sites have outpaced traditional fast-fashion chains in speed and price, forcing H&M and Zara to adopt a "elevation" strategy that emphasizes better quality and a luxury feel. New premium lines feature collaborations with well-known designers and use materials like leather, cashmere and selvedge denim, resulting in price tags well above four hundred euros for some jackets. Meanwhile, the cheapest garments stay near ten euros, preserving appeal to price-sensitive shoppers.

Store layouts are being enlarged and refined, with signage that avoids traditional "sale" language. Both companies cite these moves as a way to retain relevance in a broader middle segment now crowded with ultra-fast competitors.

Why it matters

The shift shows how legacy retailers are adapting to survive against faster, cheaper online rivals.
