Hackers hoard encrypted data now, eye quantum computers to crack it later

Cybercriminals are stealing databases they cannot read today, banking on future quantum computers to break the encryption, while a $500 million fund seeks to back quantum-proof security solutions.

A growing body of evidence shows that cyber attackers are already collecting encrypted data sets from a wide range of organizations, even though current cryptography renders the information unreadable. This strategy, dubbed "harvest now, decrypt later," relies on the eventual arrival of commercial quantum computers capable of breaking standard encryption. Nicolas Sauvage, who leads TDK Ventures, explained that his $500 million fund is targeting companies developing quantum-resistant security measures, warning that the threat could become widespread within roughly seven years.

He pointed to the Chinese government-backed Salt Typhoon campaign, which has siphoned data from more than 200 firms across 80 nations, as a stark illustration. While some analysts predict quantum decryption could emerge in a few years, others, including ARK Invest researchers, place it no earlier than 2044. In a separate development, Trump Media & Technology Group has floated a plan to sell pre-release access to President Trump's Truth Social posts and to eliminate quarterly SEC earnings reports, prompting critics to label the approach as potentially creating a two-tiered, rigged market. The newsletter also noted oil prices briefly topping $90 a barrel and other market movements.
