Hair surgeon warns three Halloween accessories can damage scalp and hair
A hair surgeon cautions that wigs, hair dye and coloured sprays used for Halloween can cause traction alopecia, scalp irritation or breakage if applied improperly.
Dr Balwi of Elithair warns that popular Halloween hair accessories—wigs, hair dye and coloured sprays—can harm hair and scalp when misused. Tight or poorly secured wigs create constant tension, a known cause of traction alopecia that can result in permanent thinning. Coloured sprays often need heavy application, leaving residue that dries hair and makes removal difficult, leading to breakage from repeated washing.
Hair dyes may cause allergic reactions, producing itching, burning, dryness or blisters, with symptoms sometimes delayed up to three days. The doctor recommends checking for signs such as redness, irritation, bumps or unexpected hair loss, discontinuing the product, washing as directed, and consulting a professional if issues persist.
Why it matters
Improper Halloween hair styling can cause lasting scalp damage and hair loss for many people.
