Halifax to unveil blue plaque honoring England football legend Frank Worthington
A blue plaque commemorating former England striker Frank Worthington will be installed in Halifax after a swift fundraising drive.
The Halifax Civic Trust has secured funding to place a blue plaque on the family home in Shelf, marking the birthplace of former England forward Frank Worthington. Worthington earned eight caps and scored twice for the national side, playing for clubs including Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, Bolton, Birmingham City, Southampton and Leeds United over a 25-year career. A £650 fundraising goal was met within days of the campaign’s launch, with additional contributions earmarked for the Alzheimer's Society’s Sport United Against Dementia fund.
Volunteer John Peters explained that the plaque offers the community a way to remember a player known for his showmanship and local popularity. He noted the strong public response, with many residents sharing personal memories of Worthington. The trust hopes to unveil the plaque later this year.
Why it matters
