Halle commemorates seven years after synagogue attack with plaques, speeches and silence
Seven years after the Halle synagogue attack, the city held a plaque exhibition, survivor speeches and a minute of silence.
The city of Halle marked the seventh anniversary of the 2019 synagogue attack with a series of commemorative activities. Posters featuring survivor testimonies were hung throughout the city, and survivors like Naomi Henkel-Guembel and İsmet Tekin delivered speeches. A minute of silence was observed at the exact moment of the first fatal shots, prompting trams and buses to stop and church bells to toll.
The remembrance was organized by the Soligruppe 9. Oktober and the local Jewish community, whose chair Max Privorozki also spoke. Simultaneously, a rally was held on Berlin's Oranienplatz organized by the Initiative Antisemitismus und Rassismus gemeinsam bekämpfen. Participants emphasized focusing on the victims rather than political debate.
Why it matters
The remembrance highlights ongoing concerns about antisemitic violence and community resilience in Germany.
