Hamburg lawyers oust pension fund chair over alleged extremist social media posts
Members of Hamburg's lawyer pension scheme voted to remove chair Jörn Weitzmann after accusations that his social-media activity was extremist.
During a members' assembly of the Hamburg lawyer pension fund, a covert effort by a network of left-wing attorneys resulted in the ousting of chair Jörn Weitzmann. Opponents, including SPD member Janwillem van de Loo, accused Weitzmann of downplaying right-wing extremism and called for his removal.
The meeting, held at the Nobelhotel Grand Elysée, saw a higher than usual attendance, driven by the planned vote. Oliver Islam, a board member of the German Lawyers Association, was identified as a leading organizer of the campaign. Following the vote, several left-leaning lawyers expressed approval on social platforms, while others, such as notary Michael Selk, lamented the rise of extremist-adjacent thinking.
