Hamza bin Laden’s Faked Death Masks Growing al-Qaeda Revenge Network Targeting the UK
Hamza bin Laden, long believed dead, is alive and has assembled a broad al-Qaeda-linked network planning attacks against the United Kingdom and other Western targets.
A fresh intelligence assessment indicates that al-Qaeda successfully deceived U.S. agencies into thinking Hamza bin Laden was killed in a 2019 airstrike, a deception arranged by the Haqqani Network and former al-Qaeda chief Ayman Zawahiri. Following Zawahiri’s 2022 death, Hamza assumed command, establishing terror training sites in Afghanistan, including the rebuilt al-Farooq camp in Kandahar, and forging alliances with the Iranian military, Hamas, Islamic State and numerous African and Syrian groups.
The report identifies the United Kingdom as a key target due to its historic partnership with the United States and its Middle-East ties. Anticipated threats encompass mass-casualty bombings, kidnappings, sabotage, attacks on transport and Jewish or Israeli interests, as well as political assassinations and cyber-enabled operations. Analysts caution that al-Qaeda’s revived network, supported by the Taliban-controlled sanctuary in Afghanistan and ongoing conflicts in Gaza and the Sahel, has entered a renewed warning phase for the West.
Why it matters
The revived bin Laden-led network could enable large-scale terrorist attacks against Western nations.
