Haneda Airport Unveils New Terminal Satellite to Meet Surging Passenger Numbers
Tokyo's Haneda Airport opened a six-gate satellite extension of Terminal 1, slated for September, as travel demand hits record levels.
A new satellite annex with six gates opened at Haneda Airport's Terminal 1 on Tuesday, with full operations expected in September. Built using steel and roughly 1,800 cubic meters of timber, the structure aims to lessen environmental impact while boosting passenger amenities such as a lounge, a kids’ zone and free self-driving shuttles like the four-person "iino." The addition follows a surge in airport usage, surpassing 90 million passengers last year and hitting the 490,000 takeoff-landing ceiling.
To alleviate congestion, Japanese carriers will now require domestic bags to be checked in at least 30 minutes before departure, up from 20 minutes. Kumiko Saito of Japan Airlines urged travelers to allow extra time for the longer walk from security checkpoints. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism reports that on-time departures have slipped to an average of 83 percent among the top ten airlines in fiscal year 2025.
