Hanwha Ocean expands warship exports to Thailand, Greece and Chile

Hanwha Ocean is intensifying its overseas warship sales, targeting navies in Thailand, Greece and Chile while leveraging its submarine design know-how.

Hanwha Ocean is stepping up its push into the global warship market by focusing on navies in Thailand, Greece and Chile, aiming to broaden its export footprint. The company draws on a record that includes participation in all three Korean Destroyer eXperimental (KDX) programs and multiple Jangbogo submarine projects, having built 17 of Korea’s 24 submarines. Past deliveries span frigates for Bangladesh and Thailand and naval support ships for Britain and Norway.

It has recently been selected as the preferred bidder for Thailand’s next-generation frigate project and is exploring similar opportunities in Greece and Chile. In May, Lloyd’s Register granted a principle approval for a 2,000-ton export submarine design, paving the way for further customization. Hanwha Ocean also prepares for Korea’s upcoming nuclear-powered submarine program, pledging continued cooperation with the government and navy.

Why it matters

The expansion could reshape naval procurement patterns in key regions and boost South Korea's defence-export market.
