Hanwha Systems and UAE's EDGE sign deal to create integrated air defence network
Hanwha Systems and the state-owned UAE defence group EDGE have signed a term sheet to build a combined air-defence system covering long, medium and drone-counter capabilities.
During a ceremony in Abu Dhabi, Hanwha Systems and the UAE’s state-run defence conglomerate EDGE signed a term sheet that defines a collaborative effort to establish an integrated air-defence network. The plan includes long- and medium-range systems as well as counter-drone solutions, tying together ground platforms like the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher with Hanwha’s radar and missile technologies. The two firms will seek government clearances to form a local joint venture, aiming to produce components domestically and strengthen the UAE’s defence industry.
Hanwha Systems intends to shift from supplying individual weapons to delivering a full multilayered network, positioning the UAE as a strategic hub for expansion into the wider Middle East. The partnership builds on Hanwha’s earlier contracts supplying radars, launchers and missile parts to the UAE and other regional customers. CEO Yang Ki-won highlighted the deal as a turning point toward deeper technological cooperation and localisation.
