Hape Kerkeling warns AfD could enable a new Buchenwald in Thüringen

Comedian Hape Kerkeling, speaking at a public hearing in the Thüringen state parliament, accused the AfD of being capable of establishing a concentration camp like Buchenwald.

During a public hearing of the Justice Committee in the Thüringen Landtag, entertainer Hape Kerkeling warned that the AfD’s extremist ideology might allow the creation of a concentration camp akin to Buchenwald. Invited by the Die Linke parliamentary group, he emphasized his personal connection to the Holocaust, noting his grandfather spent three years in Buchenwald. Kerkeling argued that the party’s slogan "everything is possible" signals a willingness to pursue any measure, including the revival of Nazi-era terror.

He described the AfD as constitutionally suspect due to its glorification of the Nazi past and its reliance on hatred toward minorities. Calling for a ban procedure against the AfD, he appealed to lawmakers to protect the antifascist principles of the German constitution.

Why it matters

The remarks intensify debate over a potential legal ban of the AfD, reflecting broader concerns about extremist politics in Germany.
