Harmanpreet Kaur resigns as captain of India women's cricket across all formats
Veteran batter Harmanpreet Kaur announced she is stepping down as captain of the Indian Women's Cricket Team in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, while confirming she will keep playing internationally.
Harmanpreet Kaur, 37, used her Instagram account to declare that she will no longer serve as captain of the Indian Women's Cricket Team in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She called the move a hard-fought decision, recalling years of memories, emotions and personal sacrifices. Kaur first led the side in T20Is in 2016, added the ODI captaincy in 2022 and assumed full-format leadership in 2023.
Under her guidance, India secured its first ODI World Cup title last November and captured a second consecutive Asian Games gold in the T20 format. While stepping away from the armband, she affirmed her intention to continue playing for the love of cricket and expressed confidence in the team's future. The statement thanked teammates, coaches, staff, the BCCI and fans for their support throughout her captaincy.
Why it matters
The change marks a leadership transition for a top women's cricket side that recently achieved historic victories.
