Harvard Astrophysicist Christopher Stubbs Joins Anthropic’s Governance Trust Ahead of IPO
Anthropic appointed Harvard astrophysicist Christopher Stubbs to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, which selects most of the AI firm’s board as it prepares an IPO.
Anthropic announced that Christopher Stubbs, a Harvard astrophysicist celebrated for discovering the universe’s accelerating expansion, will fill one of two open seats on its Long-Term Benefit Trust. The trust, which holds a special class of non-economic stock, elects a majority of the seven-person board and is expected to face heightened scrutiny as the company moves toward an IPO, possibly as early as next month and valued at more than $2 trillion.
Stubbs, former dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences and member of the advisory group JASON, has written about ensuring AI-assisted research remains reproducible. He joins fellow trustees Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and former Fed chair Ben Bernanke, while a vacancy remains after Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar’s departure. Anthropic, a Public Benefit Corporation, also created a separate Public Benefit Fund to allocate 5 % of shares to philanthropic causes and support those adversely affected by AI.
Why it matters
The appointment gives a leading scientist influence over Anthropic’s AI strategy just before a massive IPO, affecting how the technology is governed.
