Harvard scientists sustain brain organoids for over five years, showing human-like development

Researchers at Harvard have kept brain organoids alive for more than five years, observing maturation patterns comparable to those of human brains.

A team led by developmental neurobiologist Paola Arlotta succeeded in maintaining brain organoids in culture for over five years. The prolonged survival allowed the structures to progress through developmental stages that mirror human brain growth. Junior scientist Irene Faravelli provided the early images that sparked the project, and Arlotta praised the initiative as a bold step forward. The findings suggest that long-term organoid cultures can serve as valuable models for studying brain development and disease.
