Harvey Weinstein faces new prison term after six-year legal saga

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer, is set to receive a sentence on Wednesday for the 2006 sexual assault of Miriam Haley, a former TV production assistant. His original 23-year sentence from March 2020 was vacated by the New York Court of Appeals due to prejudicial testimony, prompting a series of retrials that reconvicted him of a first-degree criminal sex act while other charges ended in acquittals or hung juries.

Manhattan prosecutors plan to request a 20-year prison term, which would keep him behind bars into his late 80s, whereas his defense has not indicated what sentence they will pursue. Weinstein, who continues to deny the allegations, will address the court, and Haley is expected to testify again. He is currently housed in a medical unit at Bellevue Hospital after stints in state prison and Rikers Island, and he suffers from chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes and mobility issues. A separate rape conviction in Los Angeles remains pending resentencing.
