Haryana consumer panel orders Apple India to refund customer over iPhone 15 faults

A Haryana district consumer commission ruled that Apple India must return Rs 45,500 to a buyer whose iPhone 15 suffered overheating and connectivity issues.

Advocate Rajbir Phogat bought an iPhone 15 for Rs 64,999 in early 2024 and soon reported persistent overheating, Bluetooth failures and dropped calls. After multiple visits to an Apple-authorized service centre and a software update, the issues remained, prompting Phogat to switch mobile carriers and even purchase iCloud storage, all without resolution. Apple India denied a manufacturing defect, alleging the phone had been altered with dust, a non-original rear lens and scratches, and refused warranty service.

The Rohtak district consumer commission, chaired by Nagender Singh Kadian with members Tripti Pannu and Vijender Singh, rejected Apple’s claims, noting the lack of independent technical evidence. The panel ordered Apple to refund Rs 45,500, add 9 % annual interest from the filing date, and pay Rs 5,000 each for mental agony and litigation expenses, with the handset to be returned upon payment.

Why it matters

The ruling highlights consumer rights enforcement against major tech firms in India.
