Hawaii braces for another tropical system as Lala recovery continues

Hawaii is still coping with Hurricane Lala’s damage while forecasters warn a new cyclone could hit the islands this weekend.

Hawaiian communities are still rebuilding after Hurricane Lala, which stripped roofs, toppled trees and left many without electricity. A low-pressure system moving westward could become a tropical storm and pass close to the Big Island this weekend, potentially delivering as much as 15 inches of rain and triggering severe flooding, mudslides and hazardous rip currents. Governor Josh Green and other state leaders will hold a news conference to discuss the possible cyclone and the ongoing response to Lala, which has been blamed for two fatalities.

One victim, a man in his 60s, was found dead in a pasture after a welfare check, while 93-year-old former teacher May Doi was discovered after escaping floodwaters. About 13,200 customers on the Big Island remain without power, and repairs are expected to take at least two weeks.

Why it matters

Another storm could worsen damage and endanger residents still recovering from Lala.
