HBO greenlights new mystery drama 'Imposter' from Kalos Chu with Lauren LeFranc producing

HBO has begun developing a dark mystery series titled “Imposter,” created by writer Kalos Chu and produced by Lauren LeFranc and Rachel Jacobs.

HBO announced the development of a new dark mystery series called “Imposter,” which follows an outsider beginning his freshman year at a prestigious university. The concept comes from Kalos Chu, a Harvard 2023 graduate who has previously interned at Lucasfilm, marking his debut professional screenwriting credit. Executive producers include Lauren LeFranc, celebrated for the Emmy-nominated limited series “The Penguin,” and Rachel Jacobs, both operating through their production banner Acid and Tender, the first original project under their overall agreement with HBO.

Sources said the pitch attracted notable attention when it was presented to buyers in early August, leading to its acquisition by the network. Representation for Chu is handled by Untitled and Hansen Jacobson, while LeFranc’s agents include Untitled, CAA, ID and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Why it matters

The deal expands HBO's slate with fresh talent and signals confidence in new mystery content for streaming audiences.
